ABOUT THE FASHION LAW ACADEMY AFRICA (FLAA)
SHAPING. EDUCATING. GUIDING. INSPIRING.
Fashion Law Academy Africa (FLAA) is Africa's first dedicated institution for fashion law education, research and policy. We exist to advance legal knowledge across the African fashion, beauty and creative industries by equipping lawyers, businesses, policymakers and industry professionals with the legal frameworks needed to support a thriving creative economy.
Our journey began in 2022, when the organisation was established as the Fashion Law Institute Africa, with a vision to introduce and develop the field of fashion law across the continent. Following a temporary pause in our operations, the organisation relaunched in March 2025 as Fashion Law Academy Africa (FLAA), with a renewed vision and commitment to developing fashion law in Africa.
Fashion law education has traditionally been built around Western legal systems and industry contexts. FLAA was built for Africa. Every course, publication and research project we produce is grounded in African legal systems, African markets and African realities, recognising the continent's legal diversity, cultural heritage and rapidly growing creative economy.
Since our relaunch, FLAA has developed African Fashion Law Foundations, Africa's first dedicated fashion law curriculum; published the Annual African Fashion Law Report; and launched the African Journal of Fashion Law and Policy, the continent's first peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to the discipline.
Our work extends beyond education. Through research, policy engagement and thought leadership, we contribute to conversations on intellectual property, labour rights, consumer protection, sustainability, trade, manufacturing, beauty, textiles, luxury goods, cultural heritage and emerging technologies shaping Africa's fashion industry.
We exist because Africa's fashion industry deserves legal infrastructure that matches its ambition. Designers need to protect their creations. Businesses need legal certainty to grow. Lawyers need specialist knowledge to serve the creative economy. Policymakers need evidence-based research to build effective regulatory frameworks. FLAA is helping build that ecosystem.
Pan-African in mandate and global in outlook, Fashion Law Academy Africa serves students, practitioners and institutions across the continent while contributing to the development of fashion law as an emerging field of legal scholarship worldwide.
Fashion Law Academy Africa (FLAA) is an independent African institution for fashion law education, research and policy. FLAA is the current name of the organisation established in 2022 as the Fashion Law Institute Africa and relaunched under its current name in March 2025.
